Hybrid - Digital & Analog Mode Repeaters
Most of the P25 digital standard repeater devices are designed to operate in dual mode. They receive either digital or analog transmissions and repeat the transmission in the same format. Analog in - Analog Out, Digital in Digital out. They can of course only do one of these jobs at any given instant. In order to cross over, Gencom can set up a system with a digital hybrid receiver attached to both an Analog and a Digital transmitter, so that a Digital signal will be retransmitted on BOTH Analog & Digital (and the same goes for Analog received signals).
The obvious advantage of a dual mode repeater is the ability to conduct future conversion of an entire system to digital only mode with the lowest cost. Infrastructure can be put in place that will support legacy analog devices (eg contractors) while providing a ready-made upgrade path to digital.
Icom & Kenwood produce IDAS & Nexedge technologies respectively - both of which are considered to be proprietory developmental implementations of most of P25 - each with a slightly different featureset and capabilities. Gencom supports, supplies, configures and services all brands or digital & hybrid repeaters.
